Outward Definitive Edition

Great potential, but severe flaws.

Ok so. This review is coming many years after finishing it with a friend. And im not sure if things have changed. But this was my experience with it. Brutally hard for a while, getting better gear is the only thing that will make you stronger really. There is other things but, they are negligible in comparison. Playing coop with my friend, he progressed his story and got his rewards, but i did not get mine. It required me to play through 2 times so we could both get our gear. Very annoying and time consuming. This is very much a slow progression game. Dont expect to make monumental progress every time you sit down and play it. Because that just isnt going to happen. The survival mechanics are great and add a sense of "i need to take care of myself" with decent food and water requirements that dont go completely overboard like some survival games, that require you to eat more than a horse and drink an ocean on a daily basis. I dont own any of the dlc. And i cant comment on that stuff. Nor the endgame boss fights past the end of the story as my friend got bored of it and we moved onto other games. But i imagine the best most challenging fights are to be found there. But getting to them, is also a big pain in the butt. Not to mention even defeating them. To me this game is like. Dark souls, meets Green Hell, Meets Morrowind. My biggest gripe would be traveling from place to place. Takes a very long time, and sucks very badly. Also the inventory is quite realistic, so you cant just pack your bag with all the things that drop and that you find. The more weight you carry, the slower you get. But if you like games that dont hold your hand. And you have a good buddy to experience the game fully with. There is alot of fun to be had here.

Firewatch

Potential, but wasted potential.

First, it took me all of like 2 hours to complete the game. There may have been some hidden things to find, but there is no real drive to find or explore anything as its very dull. Walking simulator, with pick a response in between walking, which is not that compelling but, the STORY IS SO SHORT and what could have been a good experience and an interesting game gets cut down to almost nothing and you're left wondering why you paid for the game in the first place. I loved What Remains of Edith Finch, its not that I dont enjoy story or walking, its that this one makes me hope for more, and then rips that hope away from me multiple times over by not continuing the cool parts of the story, and ending way sooner than I would have liked while not delivering on any of the cool story that had happened to that point. Avoid this one, I paid 4 bucks for it, and its not even worth that in my opinion. I dont see any reason anyone should buy this game.

Nice story.

Really interesting story, better than I was expecting for sure. It does have multiple endings and branching story. But replaying it would not be nearly as fun I would think. Sure you can play it again and choose differently, but I dont really see much fun in doing it over again so soon. Maybe with some time between playing it. Its a great example of how a different idea, can really be something great. Its not for everybody, but if you like an intriguing mystery, and story, over hack and slash ect gameplay, then this might be something you would like. It is on the short side, I think it took me 4ish hours to complete. But for 20 dollars, it seems a little on the steep side for a game that will repeat many of the scenes you have already seen and heard before. But all in all, I really enjoyed the experience, and may play it again and do things differently.

Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition

Micro manage and endurance system...

First off, if you are interested in this because of the old classics. Its not the old classics. There are glaring flaws about the original pause based system. If you like micro managing and it doesnt bother you to pause so much then you might like it. BUT. The endurance system feels like it supplants the actual health of your character, why have a health system and an endurance system both. I have been waiting to play this till I got the white march season pass. And I am extremely disappointed with how bad it is. The frame rate jumps all over, fullscreen isnt really fullscreen. Bugs with some text being blurry STILL after 2 years. They would have been better off making this a turn based game. The pause based combat system sucked then, and it sucks now. People want to enjoy the game, not micro manage everything that happens in the game. The game gets high praise from many for its story, which I will admit is very well written and very good. But it doesnt take away the fact that you cant keep lootable items highlighted like the old games. Or that you cant roll for stats either so no matter what your main character and any other characters you make will feel very gimped. Classes are very restrictive and you CAN play as you want to play. But it is not efficient or very fun to do so. If you take paladin for example, you CAN go off tank dps support. But you will be less effective at everything and others will do your roles you are trying to do better anyways. So it feels less like "play your own way" than just about any rpg I have played other than mmo games. Overall very disappointed. And uninstalling it. The pause combat micro managing isnt fun to me, nor is alot of the choices they made with design. If my character has 450 health, and 77 endurance, once that endurance is gone they go down? Lay on hands restores endurance not health? I was playing on normal difficulty, and have played through baldurs gate many times over. This one just got where its at on the backs of the classics. While the story is amazing, the gameplay and systems are really really bad and I wouldnt recommend it for anyone, unless they want to play it just for the story and let their group auto combat like the old Ultima games. Which is probably what I will do just to experience the story, and forgo the terrible decisions made here. We need more turn based tactical rpgs! Not this...not this.

Curious Expedition

Not alot of fun.

It lacks alot. And I mean alot. Expeditions go by so fast, it feels like walking around the block. So in depth exploring, which is what I bought the game for, is not present. You will find yourself constantly running out of sanity and sanity giving items even on the easiest level. Its unrewarding, short, and 100% not what I was expecting. Any game that has exploring, should not take so little time. Depending on your luck, you can find the first Golden pyramids within the first 5 minutes on the map. The scope of the game is very small. And yet you will have problems being able to move around without going crazy and failing your mission. This is exactly how you shouldn't do an exploring game. I regret this purchase.

Lands of Lore™ 1+2

One of my favorites growing up.

Lands of Lore 1 is a timeless classic. 5 stars no question. Lands of Lore 2, I never liked 1 bit, the whole randomly transforming put me off the game so much I never played it for more than 30 minutes. If you buy this, buy it for 1, 2 is one that has little appeal.

Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands

Great game!

The game is great, a real flashback to my teenage years. But this version using doxbox is very sub par. If you purchase this game, make sure to go get ScummVM, it has the ZEngine which was written by someone to specifically play the zork games built into it. It solves pretty much every issue. Such as, panning speed/stutter and video clips having the ugly black lines in them. It also adds in subtitles and the drop down menu on the top just like the windows version has. And all you have to do is download the fonts, and show it where the game files are. So buy this version to support GOG, but get ScummVM to play the game. Thats why only 3 stars instead of 4 or 5, because we have to use a 3rd party app.
